Tips To Effectively Help You To Maintain Your Sauna

By Benjamin Wise

If your wood becomes very discolored, you can lightly sand it to remove stains. Alternatively, you can wash the wood with oxalic acid and trisodium phosphate mixtures. These chemicals are poisonous; therefore, you must handle them carefully, and you should mix them with water in a container that is not made of metal. While using, wear rubber gloves and goggles.

Wash benches and walls thoroughly and rinse with clear water afterwards. If your sauna has an electric heater, this needs almost no maintenance. You'll need to wipe down the stainless steel surfaces, but otherwise it should not require any care.

When you wash the surfaces, use water and mild detergent along with a soft cloth. Do not use steel wool. If you do, you'll scratch the surface and cause rusting if some of the steel particles from the steel wool are not washed off.

If you use a wood-burning heater in your sauna, you'll need to do a little bit more maintenance. You need to remove the ashes regularly and keep the exhaust pipe free of obstruction. Don't let creosote build up in the exhaust pipe. Doing so can cause a fire hazard. To be safe, have it inspected regularly and have creosote removed when needed.

Cleaning your sauna stones

Your sauna stones are pretty maintenance free, but they should be inspected occasionally to make sure they're not cracking. When you do have one that cracks, replace it. You can use just about any kind of stone in your sauna; the best type of stone is one with a rough surface, since these release steam faster.

Another occasion upon which you might need to exchange your sauna stones is if they emit a bad odor. Occasionally, this happens with new stones, but should not be a problem with stones that have been used for some time.
