10 Sauna Accessories Worth Using

By Paul Symonds

A sauna is a wonderful experience that can be enhanced with well chosen accessories. There is an entire range of products that are on the 'must have' list for any true sauna lover. But, do keep in mind when picking out accessories to make sure that they blend in well with the sauna environment - you can't go wrong with a natural look, essentially wooden, with touches of fabric like cotton.

1. Sauna fragrances are something that can add a lot to the sheer sensuous pleasure that one gets from a sauna. Essential oils and fragrances that can be diluted with water, or poured over the hot stones in the sauna can make a sauna experience even more relaxing. Try fragrances like pine, eucalyptus or birch for scents that linger and invigorate.

2. Thermometers and hygrometers can be very useful in a sauna and will help you maintain the desired temperature and let you know when its getting too hot. A thermometer is handy for easy temperature measurement, while a hygrometer keeps you informed about humidity levels. You can also get a timer to make sure you don't stay in the sauna too long.

3. To make your sauna experience truly authentic, get a few wooden pails with dippers or ladles. Handcrafted ones of Finnish pine will look really attractive and you can use them to splash cool water on the stones to create the steam that's needed to unclog your pores.

4. Wooden stools and chairs are more comfortable than the usual short wooden ledges in a sauna and can also help you fit in a few more people.

5. Another must-have accessory is a set of skin brushes, excellent for exfoliating and invigorating the skin all over your body.

6. For added comfort, go in for wooden back and leg rests to go with your sauna benches and stools.

7. Subtle, soothing light is another important feature of a well-equipped sauna. Lights for saunas have to be well insulated and steam-resistant. A well-lit sauna is safer, with less chance of slipping, tripping or generally getting into hot water!

8. A fog-resistant mirror is a good idea, too. You don't have to peer into a steamed-up mirror or keep wiping the surface to get rid of the mist on it.

9. You'll find a towel rack really useful. Just fasten it to the wall outside the sauna and hang your towels and bathrobes on it, so that they are near at hand when you need them.

10. Last but not the least on the list of absolutely must-haves are plenty of soft, plush towels that you can roll up and use as back rests or head rests if you want to lie down.
